Student-Athletes Succeed in Classroom

The Penn State Mont Alto Athletic Department and the Academic Support Center joined forces last year to further encourage and promote the academic success of Penn State Mont Alto’s student-athletes. Naomi Radio’s role as the ASC’s Academic Skills Coach is to provide a bridge between these two areas that better connects student-athletes with services in the ASC and across campus.

The following is a short summary describing the academic achievements of our student-athletes last spring. Their success is not only a testament to their own dedication, but also that of their coaches, professors, advisors, and mentors.

The information listed below is based on data from 101 student-athletes representing Penn State Mont Alto on 9 varsity teams (2 teams, Cross Country and Tennis are co-ed programs) during the spring 2010 semester.

The semester grade point average for all student-athletes was 2.97 while the GPA for all Mont Alto Students was 2.91.  The semester GPA for women’s athletics was 3.27.  The Women’s Cross Country team compiled the highest semester GPA, with an amazing 3.95.  Both Women’s Volleyball and Tennis also earned team GPAs above a 3.0.  For the men, the semester GPA was 2.66 overall.  The Men’s Golf team compiled the highest with a 3.2. Both Baseball and Men’s Tennis also earned team GPAs above a 3.0.

As a whole, 53% of student-athletes earned a 3.0 semester GPA or higher.  Less than 14% of student-athletes earned a GPA below 2.0, compared to more than 15% of full-time students.  To add to that, 28 student-athletes made the spring 2010 Dean’s List!

Congratulations and keep up the excellent work in the classroom!
