Mont Alto Baseball splits with Hazleton

Mont Alto Baseball splits with Hazleton

Penn State Mont Alto traveled to Penn State Hazleton on Tuesday for a tough conference double header.  The first game was a grueling duel, back and forth, that continued on into extra innings.  The pitchers from both schools, Chase King of Mont Alto and Hazleton's Drew Sherkness, went the full 8 innings for the first of 2 games.  Mont Alto stacked up 5 doubles throughout the game, with center fielder Zeb Thorson putting up 2 of them.  Thorson also led Mont Alto with 2 stolen bases, and 3 hits to help them bring out the final run they needed to clinch the first game in 8 innings with a final score of 5-4.

Game two started off for Mont Alto just where they had left off from the last game.  Thorson would have another big stolen base in the top of the first, and right fielder Tyler Geesaman gave a nice sacrifice hit to get Thorson in for the first run of the game.  Thorson would score again in the top of the 3rd thanks to another sacrifice grounder by third baseman Justin Warner.

Hazleton would have a strong inning as well as Sherkness would smash a 2 run shot out of the park to tie the game at 2.  Mont Alto would again battle through with a homer of their own from Travis Barthalow in the top of the fourth.

Hazleton would not allow Mont Alto to take both of the games from them at their home field as they stormed in to score another run in the bottom of the fifth, and another in the sixth with an RBI from Sherkness, making that his 3rd of the game.
