Baseball wins one over York in double-header

 

Penn State Mont Alto's Baseball team returned home on Sunday afternoon to host a conference double-header against Penn State York.  Mont Alto dropped the first game 18-8 in five innings, before bouncing back to take the second game over York 18-15 in 6 innings. 

 

Mont Alto was leading the first game 4-2 after the first inning of play.  York was able to quickly take control of the game in the third inning, when they scored five more runs to lead 9-2. And again in the 4th inning they gained a bigger lead when they scored 11 more runs.  Mont Alto was able to score four batters in the bottom of the fourth but they were not able to make up for all the runs given up. 

 

Jordan Weller started the game on the pitcher's mound for Mont Alto, pitching 3 innings, allowing seven earned runs on six hits, one walked batter and two strikeouts.  Weller gave up a homerun in the first inning.  Denver Cordell came into the game to start the fourth inning and did not have his best outing, pitching only 0.1 innings.  He allowed seven more runs to score, walking five batters and one hit.  Joe Furry finished the game, pitching the final 1.2 innings allowing four more runs. 

 

Cody Casey led Mont Alto at the plate, reaching base every time he was up to bat.  Casey was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and one run scored.  Jeremy Pagano was 2 for 3.  Mont Alto was able to score eight runs on eight hits.

 

 

In game two, Mont Alto and York were both swinging the bats.  Mont Alto edged out York with a score of 18-15. 

 

Mont Alto scored eight runs in the first inning of the game. York allowed six hits, three walks and a batter to reach base on an error before getting three outs in the bottom of the first.  Mont Alto slipped a little when they allowed York to get back into the game in the top of the second scoring five runs.  But Mont Alto quickly responded with six more runs in the bottom of the second.  Both teams continued to score multiple runs.  The game was suspended due to darkness in the sixth with Mont Alto keeping ahold of the lead by three and splitting the series with York.

 

Justin Warner had a great game at the plate, hitting four times on five at bats.  He recorded a grand slam and hit in six RBIs while scoring three runs.  Tanner Kibe also reached base four times on four at bats with two hits and two walks.  Kibe scored four times. 

 

McCartney pitched the first 3.1 innings giving up 10 earned runs, two homeruns and seven hits.  John Elliot came in for relief, pitching two innings and giving up five runs.  Tyler Cheadle faced two batters and getting the last two outs of the game, allowing zero runs on zero hits.

 

Mont Alto returns to action on April 10th at Wilkes-Barre for a double-header starting at 12:00 p.m.
