Glens Falls, N.Y. – The 2017 PSUAC Champion Penn State Mont Alto baseball team nearly pulled off another rally coming back from 7-3 deficit to tie it up, but the Lions fell to Wright State Lake Campus 9-7 on Tuesday. The loss eliminated Mont Alto from the USCAA Small College World Series and it finishes the season with a 14-24-1 overall record.
Both teams were not at their best defensively with the teams combining for 13 errors with Mont Alto committing six, it's most since the 14-2 loss to Penn College on March 5. The Lions out-hit the No. 3 seed Lakers by a 10-7 margin and were led by First Team All-American Jeremiah Younker who went 4-for-4 at the plate with two-RBI's and scored a pair of runs as well.
Wright State Lake Campus jumped out to the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning scoring a pair of unearned runs. The score remained the same until the top of the third inning when Mont Alto tied it up at two runs apiece. Matt Taylor reached base on an error by the Lakers shortstop and scored on a Jeremiah Younker single. Brady Topper earned the other RBI when he reached on another error in which scored Younker from first.
The tie was short lived with Wright State Lake Campus scoring four runs in the bottom of the third on three hits and were aided by a pair of Mont Alto errors. The Lions made it 6-3 in fourth on a Colby Black RBI single, but Wright State responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame.
Down 7-3, the Lions rally occurred in the top of the fifth inning. Tyler Martin began the inning by reaching and scoring on a Jeremiah Younker triple. Younker scored on a RBI-single off of the bat of Brady Topper. The bases would become loaded for Cory Chatfield and he did his job with a two-RBI fielders choice, which made it 7-7. The Lions were unable to do any more damage as they ended up stranding three runners.
The eventual winning run was scored by the Lakers in bottom of the sixth inning on a Ronaldo Acosta RBI single.
Lowell Singer and Spencer Meyers faired well on the mound for the Lions as they only gave up seven hits and were charged with giving up one earned run. The duo also combined to fan four batters in the loss.
