2020 Freshman Spotlight- Matt Gelhard

MONT ALTO, Pa. - Freshman Spotlight: This Q&A will serve as a get to know you series for our Penn State Mont Alto spring freshman student-athletes.

  1. Why did you choose to attend Mont Alto?
  • I'm close to home. Penn State is great establishment and Mont Alto truly cares about their students and their student-athletes. They make a small school into a community.
  1. If you could change one thing from your first year, what would it be and why?
  • Going into your first year of school it can take your mind in all different directions. I wish I would've learned to trust the process sooner. College is not so scary, and you will grasp life and have a good time.
  1. What is your major and why?
  • Communications. Communication is how we connect as human beings; it is an art that needs to be examined further. Communication makes the world go round.
  1. What has been your favorite course at Mont Alto and why?
  • CAS 100. This course analyzes the art of speech that we wouldn't necessarily pick up on a day to day basis. What you say and especially the way you say it has a fierce power.
  1. What is your favorite inspirational quote and who said it?
  • "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in rain." - Vivian Greene
  1. What is the hardest part of your sport?
  • The mental grind of the game, your body can be big and strong but if your mind crumbles it doesn't matter. Baseball is a game of triumph, it will play with your heart, and to have the idea that being successful 3 times out of 10 makes you a superstar is tough to wrap your head around.
  1. Name one obstacle or form of adversity you have had to overcome.
  • The world tries to shape you into what they want you to be, and a lot of times there is always someone that has something negative to say about you. I take pride knowing that I stay true to myself, and then use that to lead by example.
  1. What advice do you have for a prospective Mont Alto student-athlete?
  • Everybody loves a student-athlete that is willing to work hard on the field and in the classroom.
