Jalen Smith Matches Season-High 24 Points in Loss to Southern Virginia

MONT ALTO, Pa. – Junior guard Jalen Smith (Ranson, W. Va. / Jefferson) matched his season-high scoring mark of 24 points as Mont Alto went toe-to-toe with Southern Virginia University before falling 83-69. The loss was the first of the season for Mont Alto.

Smith has scored 24 points in three of the first four games of the 2017-18 season for the Nittany Lions and his latest performance upped his field goal percentage to 42.9%. Friday evenings game saw five different lead changes with Southern Virginia even building up a 16 point lead before Mont Alto battled back cutting the deficit to 10 points on several occasions. The Knights (3-0) responded each time as they were powered by blistering shooting from 3-point range. Southern Virginia shot 11-of-22 from distance as Jaron Anderson came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points with 15 of them coming from downtown.

Terrell Campbell (Germantown, Md. / St. John's College Prep) had a rounded night scoring seven points while also adding four assists and four steals. Jordan Gillis (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin East) and Quintyn Flemister (Harrisburg, Pa. / Harrisburg) each came off the bench to contribute a combined 19 points. The Nittany Lions were outrebounded by the visitors 44-26, but they did force 11 turnovers.

Mont Alto returns to action on Tuesday, November 21 in a home USCAA matchup with Central Penn College. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m.
