UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Senior Austin Green (Greencastle, Pa. / Chambersburg Area) captured his second PSUAC Individual Medalist honors on Tuesday, winning on the first hole of a sudden death playoff with PSU Wilkes-Barre's Jonathan Wilson. As a team, Mont Alto finished third amongst the PSUAC schools for the second-straight year and finished the overall tournament in 12th-place.
Competing on the 18th hole of the Penn State University Blue Course, Green hit a long high draw off the tee and he placed his second shot within 20-feet for an eagle attempt. Green's eagle putt came within inches and he tapped in for birdie. Wilson had a chance to extend the playoff to a second hole, but his birdie attempt slid by the right edge of the cup, giving Green the win. He also captured PSUAC Medalist honors in 2015.
Green was tied for second in the simultaneous USCAA National Championship after day one, but a 76 on day two took him out of national contention. The lefty ended up firing a two-day total of 146, which tied him for ninth overall and he was honored as a USCAA Second Team All-American. The top seven, and ties, were named first team All-Americans by the USCAA, while the next seven, and ties, were second team honorees.
Mont Alto produced a team total of 333 on Tuesday, giving the Lions a two-day total of 665 in the 20-team tournament. Penn State DuBois captured the PSUAC title with a team total of 654, just edging out PSU Wilkes-Barre who finished one stroke behind with a team total of 655.
Sophomore Robert Sirk (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro Area) was the next best finisher after Austin Green (Greencastle, Pa. / Chambersburg Area) for the Lions. Sirk tied for 68th overall in the 113-player field as he carded an 85 on Tuesday for two-round total of 169.
Cameron Lee (Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier) coupled an opening day 88 with a three-shot improvement firing a round of 85 for a two-day total of 173, which tied him for 74th. Fellow freshman Noah Whitmer (Greencastle, Pa. / Greencastle Antrim) also produced a better round on the second day shooting an 87, which was three strokes better than his round on Monday.
Matthew Lynerd (Greencastle, Pa. / Greencastle Antrim) rounded out the Lions with a 198 (98-100).
St. Mary of the Woods claimed the national championship completing the two rounds with a score of 569. Sean Barron of SUNY ESF won the individual national championship, finishing the two days at seven-under-par.
