The Penn State Mont Alto Men's Soccer team picked up their first win of the season last night against Penn State Hazleton, 2-1.
Mont Alto played a stellar game and was determined to get the win on the road. The team recorded 15 shots with eight shots on goal. All of the goals were scored in the second half of play.
The first goal was scored after a Hazleton foul was called outside the penalty box. Brandon Angle took a shot off the restart, which hit the goal and Jamal Carter was able to run in from 35 yards to finish with a hard, driven shot to the opposite corner.
Mont Alto was able to get on the board again when Jacob Sempowski played the ball down the field to Skyler Miller who went on a breakaway and took the goalie on 1v1. Miller beat the goalie at the 18 yard line and scored, giving Mont Alto their second goal.
"Hazleton was a fast team and could play," commented Head Coach Scott Stenger. "We played a 4-4-2 last game but changed to a 4-3-3 and that gave us more punch and we were able to work the sidelines more."
Mont Alto's defense was able to work their offside trap really well causing Hazleton to get caught in it several times throughout the game.
Sempowski recorded seven saves and only allowed one goal.
"The defense was great and Aaron Lewis was fantastic at sweeper. Jacob is always great in the goal and Brandon held the midfield, which was very key to our win."
There was a minor lapse in the Mont Alto defense in the second half and Abbas Mehdi was able to score Hazleton's lone goal.
"We played really well and the guys were pumped about the win," Coach Stenger adds.
Penn State Mont Alto returns to action on September 18th at home vs. Penn State Greater Allegheny at 4:00 p.m.
