Mont Alto Sweeps Greater Allegheny

Mont Alto Sweeps Greater Allegheny

The Mont Alto women's softball team (11-1) hosted the women from Greater Allegheny (1-13) on Saturday for their conference double header.

The first game got off to a slow start, and would somewhat stay that way as the pitchers from both teams did their best to control the bats.  Though Greater Allegheny pitcher Kristen Popp gave up 10 hits, she also put 5 strike-outs to her record.  On the other side Mont Alto pitcher Jess Miller pitched a complete game shut-out, allowing only 3 hits, and had 4 strike-outs.

Mont Alto's center fielder, Helena DeShong would be the difference as she drove in all 3 of her team's runs for the game.  Mont Alto won the first game 3-0.

The second game was much the same in the area of pitching.  A great effort by Popp, but the Mont Alto bats were too much as they totaled 9 runs off of 11 hits.  Mont Alto first baseman Jami Ross had a good day at the plate driving in 3 runs, and hitting a home run.

Mont Alto's Miller had a near perfect outing on the mound.  Pitching a perfect game into the last inning with 2 outs, Miller seemed to have it in the bag.  Greater Allegheny's Kaitlyn Kirkpatrick would not allow it though as she hit a single to kill Miller's perfect game.  Mont Alto would get the next batter out to end the game however, taking the game 9-0.

Mont Alto will take on third seeded New Kensington on home on Thursday before traveling to Beaver for the final game before the conference playoffs.
