Softball is ready for 2013 season

Penn State Mont Alto Softball team is excited to get their season started.  After having an impressive season in 2012, Mont Alto looks to set higher goals in 2013.  There are many stellar returning players back as well talented freshmen who are ready to win.

Mont Alto is returning nine players from last year's team, including five PSUAC All-Conference selections.  Jami Ross, Helena DeShong and Mackenzie Trafka are among the returners who all batted in the .400s last year.  Out of the nine returners, four are seniors and are looking for a great final season with Mont Alto.  Those seniors include DeShong, Kieara Fleagle, Kristyan Gates and Sharielle Wray.  Gates was on the 2011 PSUAC Championship team at Mont Alto before transferring to Penn State Harrisburg for a year.  She has returned to Mont Alto to finish out her college career.

After losing five players from last year's team, Mont Also is excited about the newcomers who have proved that they will make an impact this year.  The group consists of five freshmen and one sophomore.  The new outfielders include Brittany Fisher, Ann Steele and Kaylah Younker. Morgan Soliday and Danielle Cashman will play in the infield and Jenna Rhodes is the lone pitcher in the freshman class.

"Coach Danner and I are very pleased with the team's progress to date.  We have a lot of outstanding returning starters and excited with the new players that are athletic enough to challenge for starting positions," commented Head Coach Bobby Davis.

"Kristyan Gates, pitcher from our 2011 PSUAC Championship team has returned from Harrisburg.  Jenna Rhodes, pitcher for the 2012 State Championship Team at Fannett-Metal High School has been added to our team.  Our defense is loaded with returning starters.  Offensively, we have a good mixture of power, speed and the ability to play small ball," Coach Davis adds.  Mont Alto went 3-0 during their 2012 fall season.

Penn State Mont Alto Softball starts their season at Penn College on March 28th and their home opener is on April 2nd against Penn State Hazleton at 2:00 p.m.
