Softball splits first double-header of the season

Softball splits first double-header of the season

Mont Alto Women's Softball team had their first double-header at home on Sunday March 23rd against Corning Community College.

Corning came out in the first inning and scored first, putting the pressure on Mont Alto ladies.  However, Mont Alto answered in the fourth inning by tying the game.  Mont Alto scored in both the fifth and sixth innings taking the lead of the game.  The final score of the game was 3-2, Mont Alto winning the first game of the double-header.

Corning forced a tie breaker after losing to Mont Alto the first game. Unfortunately, Mont Alto lost the second game 5-1.

Freshman Pitcher Sarah Bortner had a phenomenal first ever softball game as a college player, as she struck out 19 hitters, allowing only one hit and walking three.  On offense, Mont Alto had three hits in the first game and seven in the second. Mont Alto's hitting went well, having little trouble with getting their runners on base.  However, they could not seem to get the runners across the plate having left 17 LOB (left of base) combined in both games of the double-header.

Those hits for Mont Alto were made by short stop Diamond Byers (Greencastle, PA), center fielder Katie Graham (Spotsylvania, VA), left fielder Samantha Gladhill (Cascade, MD), pitcher Sarah Bortner (Glenville, PA) and senior first baseman Chelsea Pittman (Chambersburg, PA).

Overall, the ladies had a good first day back on the field to kick off the 2014 season.  Their next game is Thursday March 27, 2014 at home against Hood College.
