Softball wins two against Beaver

Softball wins two against Beaver

The Penn State Women's Softball won a crucial double-header game against reigning two time PSUAC Champions Penn State Beaver on Saturday April 5th, 2014.

In the first game Mont Alto outscored their opponents 7-2.

Mont Alto had a slow start batting in the first couple of innings; however, their defense really kept them going in the game.  They eventually got it together at bat, when Brooke Porter (Shippensburg, PA) hit a homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning; then the bats started going for Mont Alto.

Mont Alto had four RBI's; three of them came from Katie Graham (Spotsylvania, VA) as well as two runs. Freshman Pitcher Sarah Bortner (Glenville, PA) struck out 12 of Beaver's batters, only allowing five hits and two runs.

The sixth inning is where the Mont Alto Women's Softball team made the big run and increased their lead. They scored three runs in that inning, forcing Beaver to only one run.  Graham hit a huge homerun batting teammates Diamond Byers (Greencastle, PA) and Kaitlyn Whiteaker (Camphill, PA) back across the home plate.

Mont Alto Women's won the first game 7-2.

Going in the second game, Mont Alto still had the momentum. The second game only lasted five innings and Mont Alto scored three plus runs in each of those innings. The game was cut short due to the mercy rule.  Mont Alto led from the start and never gave up the lead.  They scored four runs in the first inning, three runs in the second, third and fourth.

The bats for Mont Alto came alive; Graham, Whiteaker, Porter, Mariah Yingling (Waynesboro, PA) and Bortner all hit over 50%.

Mont Alto had a total of nine RBI's and two homeruns.  On defense they struck out 11 of the 22 batters for Beaver.

The final score was 13-2, Mont Alto dominating Beaver in only five innings of the second game.
