Softball splits with Hazleton

The Mont Alto ladies softball team had a game Sunday April 10th against Hazleton.

 

The first game went scoreless until the seventh inning.  Both pitchers for Mont Alto and Hazleton pitched outstanding.   

 

The only hit for Mont Alto came from freshman catcher Brooke Porter (Shippensburg, PA).  Sarah Bortner (Glenville, PA) struck out 15 batters and only allowing three hits.

 

Mont Alto gave up two runs, which were crucial; Mont Alto lost the first game of the double-header, 2-0.

 

The second game started a lot like the first; no runs were scored in the first two innings.  Mont Alto started it off, scoring in the bottom of the third and fourth innings.  Hazleton still was scoreless, trailing Mont Alto by two.

 

 

At the top of sixth inning Hazleton scored two runs scored tying the game at 2-2.  In the bottom of the sixth, Mont Alto answered back with two runs, taking the lead 4-2 and never looked back.  The final score of the game was 4-2, Mont Alto winning the second game by two runs.

 

 

Bortner pitched the entire second game striking out 14 of the 28 batters she faced.  She allowed three hits and two runs, one of which was earned.

 

 

On offense, Bortner hit 2-3 at the plate, she scored one run, recorded one RBI and a homerun for the day. Porter also was strong for Mont Alto, going 2-2 at bat with a double and scoring two runs.  Diamond Byers (Greencastle, PA) was impressive, going 3-3 at bat while scoring one run.
