Mont Alto Earns 2 USCAA National All-American Honors

This week at the USCAA National Softball Tournament in Akron, OH a number of the best softball players in the USCAA will congregate to try to lead their teams to the ultimate prize of National Champions.

The Penn State Mont Alto Softball team is no different.  As the Lady Lions strive to be the best team in the country, they bring with them two players that have helped them tremendously to succeed in this goal.  Freshman pitcher (15) Sarah Bortner was chosen as a USCAA First Team All-American for her efforts on the mound this year.  Bortner has struck out 278 batters this season, and if you're wondering how good that is it's 130 strikeouts more than the pitcher with the next most strikeouts.

Bortner also ranks 1st in the USCAA in both shutouts and complete games, and is 2nd in Earned Run Average with a 1.36.

Bortner is not the only one with national recognition though.  Freshman catcher (10) Brooke Porter has had her own outstanding first year as she was named USCAA Second Team All-American.

Porter has been outstanding not only behind the plate this year, but also standing at the plate where she holds a Batting Average of .420, an On Base Percentage of .485, and a Slugging Percentage of .636.  Porter also has 18 RBI's and a .967 Fielding Percentage only allowing 7 Passed Balls in 31 games.

The combination of Bortner to Porter, pitcher to catcher, freshman to freshman has been a winning combination for the Lady Lions this season, and will continue to prove worthy of national attention as they work their way through the USCAA National Tournament.
