Lady Lions Pull Out Extra Inning Victory

Lady Lions Pull Out Extra Inning Victory

The Lady Lions of Penn State Mont Alto faced another challenging team today during their 4th game of the 2014 USCAA National Softball Tournament in Briarcliffe College from New York.

Although Briarcliffe scored quickly in the 1st inning to go up 1-0, it didn't take long for Mont Alto to get their bats going either.  With First Team All-American Sarah Bortner reaching base safely off of an error by the catcher it was Second Team All-American Brooke Porter's chance at the plate.  Porter hit a shot out of the park to score 2 runs for the Lady Lions, and put them ahead 2-1.

Briarcliffe scored another run in the top of the 3rd, and 2 more in the 5th on an error by Mont Alto's right fielder.  Mont Alto wouldn't lie down yet though as they kept chipping away scoring a run in the bottom of the 5th and again in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game at 4-4.

Mont Alto held Briarcliffe scoreless in the top of the 7th, but in the bottom of the 7th Mont Alto had their own struggles getting a runner to score.  The game would remain tied and go into the 8th inning 4-4.

The top of the 8th inning proved successful for the Lady Lions as they again held Briarcliffe scoreless, and now gave themselves a chance to secure the game.  With Bortner getting on second base, Porter then bunted safely to move Bortner to third.

Designated hitter, Samantha Gladhill came to the plate to hopefully end the game with a victory for her team, and she did just that.  With a single, Gladhill drove home Bortner for the winning run in the bottom of the 8th.

Mont Alto will now patiently wait to play the winner of the (3) Ave Maria vs. (10) Penn College game this evening to continue their successful advance in the 2014 USCAA National Tournament.
