Softball Wins Big to Advance in the USCAA National Tournament

The Penn State Mont Alto (8) Softball team played their first game in the USCAA National Tournament in Akron, OH yesterday afternoon against the Hornets of Concordia College-Alabama (9).   Mont Alto started strong putting up 3 runs in the first inning, and adding another run in the second to put them up 4-0 before having to delay the game for two hours due to rain.

The Lions of Mont Alto did not let the rain cool them off though as they came back from the delay to score7 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the Hornets away with an 8 run mercy rule to finish the game.

Diamond Byers and Mariah Yingling both helped the teams cause driving in 3 runs a piece, while Sarah Bortner and Brooke Porter each added another 2 RBI's for the Lions.

The bats weren't the only thing that helped Mont Alto accelerate through the first round of the tournament however.  First Team All-American Pitcher Sarah Bortner pitched a complete game, 1 hit shutout for her team, including striking out 12 Hornets batters of the 17 that she faced.

The Lions move on to 2nd round play of the National Tournament facing number 1 seed St. Mary of the Woods in a game that got postponed due to weather conditions, but will be played this morning at 9:00am.
