Mont Alto Softball Drops Pair Against Corning Community College to Open Season

MONT ALTO, Pa. - The Penn State Mont Alto softball team opened the 2020 season on Saturday and dropped both ends of a home doubleheader to Corning Community College. PSUMA scored first but fell in the first game by a 5-1 score before being swept with a 9-0 final in the nightcap.

  • Mont Alto opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Leah Blount (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro Area) touched home plate. The run was scored when Summer Sellers (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg Career Magnet) grounded into a fielder's choice.
  • The score remained the same until the top of the fourth inning when the Red Barons were able to tie the score at 1-1 on an RBI single off the bat of Katie Kersch. Corning scored again in the bottom half of the frame when Emily Pierce drove in Faith Rodriguez.
  • The Red Barrons added three more runs within the top half of the sixth inning for the 5-1 final. Jill Murray tripled within the inning off of relief pitcher Karli Snyder (Leetown, W.Va. / Jefferson).
  • Mont Alto managed three hits within the loss as Katie McCauslin (Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) was charged with the loss after giving up two earned runs. She helped her own cause going 2-for-3 including a double within the bottom of the seventh inning.

  • The visitors opened the scoring in the top half of the second frame as they plated four runs within the inning. All of those runs were charged to Snyder who lasted 2.1 innings within the circle.
  • Up 4-0, Jill Murray made it 5-0 with an RBI single within the third inning and the visitors added four more insurance runs including a 2-RBI single to left field from Jessica Vidal within the top of the fifth.
  • Mont Alto managed three hits in the loss including doubles from Brooklyn Wagner (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) and Karli Snyder (Leetown, W.Va. / Jefferson).

Penn State Mont Alto (0-2) is back in action on Wednesday, March 18 when they host Christendom College for a doubleheader. Game times are slated for 3 and 5 p.m.
