2020 Freshman Spotlight- Emily Ridge

2020 Freshman Spotlight- Emily Ridge

By: Frank Maira, Assistant Director of Athletics/Sports Information Director

MONT ALTO, Pa. - Freshman Spotlight: This Q&A will serve as a get to know you series for our Penn State Mont Alto spring freshman student-athletes.

  1. Why did you choose to attend Mont Alto?
  • I chose to attend Mont Alto because it was affordable and close to home.
  1. If you could change one thing from your first year, what would it be and why?
  • I would change the way this (softball season) ended because I'm only at Mont Alto for two years, and one of my years of playing softball finished before it really got started. I wish I would have gotten the chance to play the whole season and continue my growth as a student-athlete.
  1. What is your major and why?
  • My major is Communication Science and Disorders. I chose to study this major because I personally witnessed how much speech therapy changed my young cousins life and I want to be able to help others like him.
  1. What has been your favorite course at Mont Alto and why?
  • My favorite course has been biology of aging because I really like the instructor, and I find the information really interesting.
  1. What is your favorite inspirational quote and who said it?
  • "The real opportunity for success lies within the person and not the job." – Zig Ziglar
  1. What is the hardest part of your sport?
  • For me, the hardest part of softball is the mental aspect of it. I always think to much about what I have to do or all the bad things that could happen. By doing that, I get in my own head and sabotage myself.
  1. Name one obstacle or form of adversity you have had to overcome.
  • One obstacle I have had to overcome was my anxiety. I used to be too scared to talk to new people and try new things. If I didn't get help, I wouldn't be a part of the softball team at Mont Alto and I probably wouldn't have gone to college right after high school.
  1. What advice do you have for a prospective Mont Alto student-athlete?
  • Life as a student-athlete can get overwhelming at times, but with good time management and communication, you'll be able to stay on top of your schoolwork and have a great athletic experience.
