Volleyball sweeps York in home opener

The Penn State Mont Alto Women's Volleyball team played their first home match of the season last night, playing host to Penn State York.  Mont Alto looked to take the first set with ease as they jumped out to an impressive 18-4 lead, thanks in part to the impressive serving from freshman Emily Walck (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin).  Mont Alto went on to win the set 25-8 after a set point ace from sophomore Austyn Leib (Littlestown, PA/Littlestown).

The second set seemed to mirror the first as the Mont Alto ladies got off to a 7-2 start.  An unfortunate knee injury suddenly befell Penn State York sophomore Tessa Berger.  This caused a problem for Penn State York as they had no bench players.  Berger would tough through the pain, and stay on the court to allow her team the chance for victory.  However, the Mont Alto team would not be denied, as they cruised through the second set with a 25-10 win.

The third set showed more fight from York as they started out with a 7-5 lead that would help them stay close until Mont Alto took control 12-11, and never looked back.  With help from a few more aces from freshman Morgan Rhone (McVeytown, PA/Mount Union) and sophomore Katie Wantz (Littlestown, PA/Littlestown), Mont Alto would win the set 25-17, and win the match 3 sets to 0.

Mont Alto sophomore Lauren Chapman (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) ended the evening leading both teams in assists with 19, and Penn State York junior Hannah Kuhn, led all players in digs with 11.  Sophomore Christine Walker (Chambersburg, PA/Cumberland Valley Christian) contributed 10 digs and 5 kills, while Walck and Wantz finished with 7 aces and 4 aces respectively for Mont Alto.  Mont Alto ended the three sets with a total 19 aces.

Mont Alto will go on the road to Penn State Brandywine on Saturday September 17th for a 12:00 p.m. match.
