Volleyball Competes Well With DuBois, but Fall in Three Sets in Dig Pink Match

MONT ALTO, Pa. – The Penn State Mont Alto volleyball team finished out a busy weekend as it celebrated its Dig Pink match on Sunday, the Lions competed well but dropped a straight set match to PSU DuBois (18-4, 9-1 PSUAC). The PSUMA volleyball program raised awareness for breast cancer by warming-up in specially designed pink t-shirts with the team also selling the shirts prior to the match, as this year's proceeds were donated to Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance.

  • Penn State DuBois won 25-19, 27-25, 25-20.

Inside the Box Score

  • Courtney Stump (Greencastle, Pa. / Greencastle Antrim) finished with 12 kills and a match-high 23 digs.
  • Katie Muse (Hagerstown, Md. / Boonsboro) had 18 assists and two service aces.
  • Allison Meyers (Greencastle, Pa. / Greencastle Antrim) patrolled the back line and collected seven digs.
  • Freshman Kirstyn Black (Saint Thomas, Pa. / James Buchanan) had five kills and three blocks, including a block within the third set that put Mont Alto up at the time.

 How it Happened

  • PSUMA won the opening point, the visiting DuBois Lions countered with five-straight before a Breanne Byers (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg Area) kill made it 5-2. Mont Alto fought back and tied it up at six points apiece after a Courtney Stump (Greencastle, Pa. / Greencastle Antrim) kill. The teams traded points within the middle of the set before once again coming to a tie at 16-16. DuBois would build a three-point advantage that they were able to maintain to close out for the first set win.
  • It was a back and forth second set, neither team was able to build more than a two point lead as their were three ties before PSU DuBois made it 13-10 after a Keara Shrefler kill. PSUMA fought back and tied it up at 16 points apiece after a Breanne Byers (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg Area) block. The teams would trade points all the way up to 24-24; the visitors once again won the set at 27-25.
  • PSUMA built a 12-8 lead in the third set that forced a DuBois timeout. Mont Alto lost the first point out of the break, but they won six straight to make it 16-9. DuBois called another timeout, which completely shifted the momentum as they rallied to regain the lead at 19-18. Mont Alto called a timeout, but was unable to swing the momentum back their way as they dropped the set 25-20.

Mont Alto (11-11, 4-6, PSUAC) return to action in a road match with nearby Wilson College on Tuesday, October 16.
