Mont Alto Volleyball Undefeated in PSUAC Crossover Weekend

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Mont Alto volleyball team was quite busy at the PSUAC Volleyball Crossover Weekend in State College where the Nittany Lions competed in famous Rec Hall against PSUAC East schools. Mont Alto won all four matches on Saturday and Sunday picking up wins over PSU Hazleton, PSU Schuylkill, PSU Brandywine and PSU Wilkes-Barre.

Penn State Mont Alto 3, Penn State Hazleton 0

  • PSUMA earned the three-set victory by scores of 25-5, 25-12 and 25-18.
  • Sophomore Alyssa Roberts (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) provided 20 assists and three digs to lead the Lions, while Melanie Tracy (York, Pa. / Dallastown Area) had a match-high 16 digs.
  • Kylee Gooding (Warriors Mark, Pa. / Tyrone Area) was the top hitter for either team with 15 kills on a total of 29 swings.

Penn State Mont Alto 3, Penn State Brandywine 2

  • Brandywine stormed out to a 2-1 lead by taking the first and third sets, but Mont Alto rallied to win the fourth and it was all PSUMA in the decisive fifth set as they took it 15-10.
  • PSUMA had three different student-athletes finish with double digit digs with Melanie Tracy (York, Pa. / Dallastown Area) tallying 18, Kylee Gooding (Warriors Mark, Pa. / Tyrone Area) had 17, while senior Katie Muse (Hagerstown, Md. / Boonsboro) finished with 14 digs.
  • Mont Alto had 46 kills compared to Brandywine's 38 with Gooding leading all attackers with 21 kills. Breanne Byers (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg Area) had a nice match with six kills and four service aces.

Penn State Mont Alto 3, Penn State Schuylkill 1

  • Sunday's action continued for Mont Alto with the Nittany Lions picking up the 3-1 scrappy win over PSU Schuylkill. The closest set played amongst the squads was the third in which Schuylkill was able to make a come from behind effort to take the 25-19 set.
  • It was a balanced attacking effort with Kylee Gooding (Warriors Mark, Pa. / Tyrone Area) finishing with 14 kills and Breanne Byers (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg Area) chipped in eight for Mont Alto.
  • Alex Horst (Mercersburg, Pa. / James Buchanan) had a pair of blocks in the win.

Penn State Mont Alto 3, Penn State Wilkes-Barre 0

  • Mont Alto finished up crossover play in perhaps their quickest match of the weekend in a 3-0 sweep against Penn State Wilkes-Barre.
  • Breanne Byers (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg Area) got into a groove and recorded a season-high 11 aces. Mont Alto finished the sweep with a season-best 25 aces.

Penn State Mont Alto (14-4, 5-1 PSUAC) will return to conference action on Tuesday night when they travel and play Penn State New Kensington at 7 p.m.
