2020 Freshman Spotlight - Yvanna Ruano

2020 Freshman Spotlight - Yvanna Ruano

By: Frank Maira, Assistant Director of Athletics/Sports Information Director

MONT ALTO, Pa. - Freshman Spotlight: This Q&A will serve as a get to know you series for our Penn State Mont Alto spring freshman student-athletes.

  1. Why did you choose to attend Mont Alto?
  • Compared to my hometown, Mont Alto is a very secluded and calm area which I really liked; but what really convinced me was the sense of family and a close-knit community especially within the athletic programs I've participated in.
  1. If you could change one thing from your first year, what would it be and why?
  • I think that my first year has been one to remember. I don't think I would change much but I would go back and not be as harsh on myself. Messing up is not the end of the world.
  1. What is your major and why?
  • I have always loved helping others and am a great advocate when needed, because of this I will major in Political Science. Long term I'm hoping to pursue law school after I graduate.
  1. What has been your favorite course at Mont Alto and why?
  • So far my favorite course at Mont Alto has been economics. It is something that challenges me but also enjoyable and applicable to my everyday life. I also like that my professor is always available when I need help.
  1. What is your favorite inspirational quote and who said it?
  • "Great things never came from comfort zones" -Ben Francia
  1. What is the hardest part of your sport?
  • The hardest part of softball for me has been making sure I don't get in my head when I'm up to hit. Once I relax and remember that I'm prepared for what the pitcher will throw, I do well.
  1. Name one obstacle or form of adversity you have had to overcome.
  • Being a two-sport (women's soccer and softball) has been a challenge at times because managing schoolwork, practices, games, and a social life all at once can be difficult. Thankfully Mont Alto has offered a great amount of support and help so that I can succeed in all aspects of my college experience.
  1. What advice do you have for a prospective Mont Alto student-athlete?
  • Never settle to be mediocre, always to push yourself to improve.
