MONT ALTO, Pa. - The Penn State Mont Alto softball team got off to a great start to its 2021 season with an extra inning 4-3 win over the visitors from PSU Schuylkill and had an early lead in the second game of the doubleheader before falling 12-6. The Nittany Lions improved to 1-1 on the season as several new faces shined.

Penn State Mont Alto 4, Penn State Schuylkill 3 (F-8)

  • Penn State Schuylkill played small ball in the final few innings to send it into extra innings. Mont Alto worked a perfect top of the eighth inning and utilized the international tie breaker to its advantage with Destiny Hall (McConnellsburg, Pa. / McConnellsburg) crossing home plate on a passed ball.

  • Neither team scored a run through the first two innings of play. In the bottom of the third frame, McKenna Sas (Canyon County, Calif. / Canyon County) sent a double that hit off the left center field wall that gave her team the 1-0 lead.

  • Schuylkill tied it back up in the fourth, before PSUMA plated two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. The bases quickly loaded up, and Sas fouled off several pitches before drawing an RBI walk. Chelsea Cover (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro Area) laid down a bunt that was misplayed by the opposing catcher.

  • Emily Bittinger (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro Area) earned the win in relief.

Penn State Schuylkill 12, Penn State Mont Alto 6 (F)

  • Mont Alto quickly jumped on the PSU Schuylkill starter with patient at-bats, Chelsea Cover (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro Area) walked to open the scoring. Fellow newcomer Chloe Sullivan (Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove Area) rocketed out a double to left center field that drove in three more runs to give PSUMA the 4-0 early lead.

  • The home team continued to pile on the scoring with two more runs in the bottom of the second inning.

  • PSUMA had a bad fifth inning, which turned out to be its downfall. Eight runs were scored within the inning to give Schuylkill the decisive 9-6 lead. They added three more runs in the final frame. Mont Alto were unable to get anything started in the bottom half of the frame as it fell 12-6.

Mont Alto has a quick turnaround returning to action tomorrow in a road doubleheader against Penn State Greater Allegheny. Game times are slated for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
