McHenry, Md. – The Penn State Mont Alto wrestling team competed in their final dual matches of the 2019-20 season on Saturday and was victorious over Garrett College and Penn State Fayette. PSUMA used the tri-match as a tune up before competing in the PSUAC/USCAA Championships next weekend followed by the NCWA Mid-East Qualifiers on February 29.
Mont Alto improved to 16-5 within dual meets as they beat the hosts Garrett College by a 30-18 score before dominating Penn State Fayette by a final team score of 51-3.
Against Garrett College
- PSUMA got off to the quick 12-0 start with forfeit wins by Mason Blank (Lancaster, Pa. / Lampeter-Strasburg) and Conner Herron (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) in their weight classes. Jack Coulston (Carlisle, Pa. / Boiling Springs) pinned Seth Chason at 141 pounds in 3:56.
- PSUMA racked up a 30-0 lead before Ron Schilpp (Severna Park, Md. / Severna Park) went all three rounds with Austin Dyson, but Dyson earned the narrow 2-1 win.
- Garrett College won the 174, 184, 197, and 285 pound weight classes for their 18 team points.
Against Penn State Fayette
- Penn State Mont Alto had a full lineup compared to Fayette who only had wrestlers competing in 125, 157 and 174 pound weight classes. Blank took a tough 3-1 loss to rival Doug Bittner as he earned the only team points for the Roaring Lions.
- John Halbrendt (Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg Area) picked up a decisive 10-3 win over his opponent at 157 pounds before Ron Schilpp (Severna Park, Md. / Severna Park) picked up his fourth pin of the year. He earned the fall in 1:28.
Mont Alto returns to action at the PSUAC/USCAA Championships that will be hosted by Penn State Fayette at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15.
