Mont Alto wins first pool play game in penalty kicks

2022 USCAA Women's Soccer Championships- Pool Play

Penn State Mont Alto 1, Paul Smith's College 0 (F/PK)

Regulation and two overtime periods were not enough to decide the opening round game for Penn State Mont Alto women's soccer in their quest for a National Championship. Paul Smith's College outshot Penn State Mont Alto 21-8 and even had a 15-1 advantage in corners, but the Mont Alto defense didn't concede a goal through the games first 110 minutes.

The opening round contest went to penalty kicks with the score tied after two overtime periods. Hayleigh Gates and Grace Kronick each converted their chances for Paul Smith's as Avery Diehl and Grace Banfe couldn't execute their chances. Mont Alto's Lacey Daum and Paul Smith's Leah Coulombe each missed the third shot of penalty kicks. The momentum would shift, however, in the final two rounds as Nicole Jones and Sydney Allison both scored their PK's and Paul Smith's missed both opportunities tying the PK's at 2-2. Sudden death incurred as Nicole Jones would record the game-winner following a miss by the opposition.

Madison Eberly paced the Mont Alto attack with three of the team's five shot attempts. Rachel Merrill and Grace Banfe each recorded a shot on goal. Kiaya Mouer was able to stop all eight shots on goal and only allowed two of the six chances faced in penalty kicks to find the back of the net as Mont Alto was victorious in the opening round of pool play.
