MONT ALTO, Pa. – The Penn State Mont Alto volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-21, 25-8, 25-10) non-conference match to Notre Dame of Maryland on Thursday night.
The Gators raced out to a 14-6 lead and forced a Mont Alto timeout. Coming out of the break, the Nittany Lions began to piece points together, including a run of seven-straight within the stretch to the cut the deficit to 21-17. Notre Dame held strong and ended up besting Mont Alto 25-21.
Notre Dame of Maryland (13-3) jumped out to early leads in both the second and third sets and was able to cruise for the three-set victory.
Senior Courtney Stump (Greencastle, Pa. / Greencastle Antrim) led the offense with eight kills, while the freshman duo of Breanne Byers (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg Area) and Rachel Manikowski (Mercersburg, Pa. / James Buchanan) combined for six kills.
Defensively, Mont Alto (3-8) had five block assists while Kirstyn Black (Saint Thomas, Pa. / James Buchanan) recorded a block solo. Alyssa Roberts (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) finished with team-high 13 digs.
Mont Alto travels to Penn State Fayette for the first-ever PSUAC Crossover Weekend with five total matches occurring between Saturday and Sunday. The Lions are slated to play Penn State Lehigh Valley at 10 a.m. and Penn State Brandywine at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
