Randy Hood

Randy Hood enters his seventh season as the head coach of the Penn State Mont Alto volleyball team during the 2023-24 academic year.

The Mont Alto Nittany Lions accomplished record success during the 2021 season under Hood's direction. The team compiled its most victories in Hood's five seasons at the helm with 22. The team qualified for the PSUAC tournament as well as the USCAA National Championships. The team defeated Penn State Greater Allegheny and King's (NY) both in straight sets to advance to the semifinal contest against Penn State DuBois. The squad advanced to the national championship game, defeating Penn State DuBois 3-0. The National Runner-Up finish was the best finish in school history for Penn State Mont Alto.

Following the completion of the regular season, Kylie Denlinger and Rachel Manikowski were named co-specialist of the year within the conference. Both players along with Gracie Vaughn were named 1st-team All-Conference members. Kylee Gooding was named a honorable mention. Gooding, Denlinger and Vaughn were also named USCAA All-Americans. Kimmy Harker, Alyssa Roberts, Kylee Gooding, Leslie Huckle and Kylie Denlinger were the team's members of the USCAA Academic All-American team for their strong performance in the classroom.

The Nittany Lions concluded their 2019 season with a 16-11 overall record, falling to eventual conference champions PSU Fayette in the PSUAC Quarterfinals. The 16-win season were the most wins the team had earned since 2016. The squad featured two different student-athletes who were named the PSUAC All-Conference Team in Melanie Tracy and Kylie Gooding. It was an outstanding debut season for Gooding who also received PSUAC West Rookie of the Year honors and was the program's first-ever All-American as a freshman. Katie Muse was the other All-American as she was placed on the second team totaling 441 assists. Kylie Gooding racked up 350 kills, which ranked fourth within the entire USCAA. She averaged 3.61 kills per set and was no slouch defensively collecting 329 digs, while her 36 blocks led the team.

Hood led the program to their fifth-straight season with 15-plus victories during the 2017 season. Mont Alto fell in the PSUAC Semifinals to PSU Fayette in a hard fought match. He helped coach four PSUAC All-Conference honorees including Courtney Stump and Allison Meyers who were both honored on the First Team.

Prior to his appointment at Mont Alto, Coach Hood spent two years as the head coach at Penn State Harrisburg where he took over a program that achieved one win prior to his arrival and saw a nine-win turnaround under his leadership. He also spent six years at Shippensburg University from 1998-2004 and led the Red Raiders to two Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference (PSAC) tournament quarterfinal appearances in 2000 and 2003.  He also has plenty of experience at the high school level, including head coaching stops at local schools in Carlisle, Big Spring and Boiling Springs.  Hood also spent a year as an assistant on the staff at Messiah College in 1993.

Hood a coaching veteran, has 23 years of coaching experience at the college and high school levels. He also brings ample experience directing or instructing volleyball developmental camps including working with Mark Pavlik, head coach of the men's volleyball team at Penn State University in State College.

He and his wife, Cindy plan to continue to reside in Carlisle, Pa. where their sons Josh and Mitchell also reside with granddaughters Emma, Olivia, Julia and Lucy.
