Mont Alto Baseball Earns First Win, But Falls To PSU Schuylkill in Myrtle Beach

Game 1

SCORE: Penn State Mont Alto 5, New River Community College 2 (F)

IN BRIEF: Penn State Mont Alto (1-7) earned its first win of the season on Saturday night with a 5-2 decision over New River Community College. The Lions got their bats going early as Jeremiah Younker ripped a 1-0 pitch for a RBI single to give his team the 1-0 lead. Mont Alto added another tally in the top of the second, but New River CC plated home a run in the bottom half of the frame. New Rivver CC tied the score up at 2-2 in the bottom of the third when a stolen base led to a run.

The Lions took the lead for good in the top of the fifth as they were the main benificieries of a fielding error that allowed them to push across a pair of runs for a 4-2 lead.

PSU Mont Alto added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Cole Bower recorded the last out of the game to earn his first save of the season. William LaRussa got the start for the Lions and he pitched 6.2 innings and scattered three hits while striking out eight.

The Lions collected eight hits on the evening. Younker, Tyler Martin and Matt Taylor each had multi-hit games. Taylor and Younker as well as Nathan Kulp each drove in a run in the PSU Mont Alto victory.

Game 2

SCORE: Penn State Schuylkill 6, Penn State Mont Alto 4 (F)

IN BRIEF: Both teams had multiple opportunities to pull away with the teams combining for 19 hits, but it was Penn State Schuylkill who prevailed 6-4 in extra innings on Sunday.

Penn State Schuylkill pushed across the opening run of the game in the top of first inning on a fielders choice. They would maintain the lead until the bottom of the seventh when PSU Mont Alto rallied back from a deficit to even the score at four runs apiece. Spencer Myers hit the RBI single with two-outs to provide free baseball from Myrtle Beach.

The score remained tied until the top of the ninth, but the Penn State Mont Alto defence unraveled letting up a pair on a fielding error. Cole Bower took the loss on the mound as he came on in relief and pitched one inning, allowed two runs, two hits and conceded a walk.

Penn State Mont Alto out-hit its opponent 10-9 in the loss. Tyler Martin, Matt Taylor, Spencer Meyers and Colby Black each collected multiple hits to lead the Lions.
