Mont Alto Drops Conference Opener to Penn State DuBois

DuBois, Pa. – The Penn State Mont Alto baseball team was unable to overcome a first inning 5-0 deficit as it dropped its conference opener 10-4 to Penn State DuBois on Wednesday evening. PSU Mont Alto falls to 2-12 overall and 0-1 in Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC).

In the bottom of the first, Penn State DuBois opened the scoring pushing across five runs within the inning. Penn State Mont Alto was held scoreless until the top of the third when the Lions made it 5-1. The Lions pushed across another run in the top of the fifth, but PSU DuBois added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 7-2. Penn State Mont Alto responded the next inning scoring a pair of runs, but DuBois added three more insurance runs in the eighth inning for the game's final score line (10-2).   

Mont Alto starting pitcher Lowell Singer (0-3) settled in after his shaky first inning as he held Penn State DuBois scoreless in his four other innings of work. Singer struck out four as he allowed five runs on 10 hits across five innings. Cole Bower and Justin Duble came in as relief pitchers as each pitcher was charged with letting in two earned runs.

The Lions had seven hits on Wednesday and were led by third basemen Tyler Martin. The freshman went 2-for-4 including a double and two RBIs. Martin is now hitting .286 on the season and his 14 total hits leads the team.

Penn State Mont Alto has a quick turnaround returning to action Thursday, March 30 when it travels to Gettysburg College for a non-conference bout. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
