Mont Alto Bats Come Alive to Propel Them to Sweep over PSU Beaver

MONT ALTO, Pa. – Penn State Mont Alto scored 17 runs on 24 hits as the Nittany Lions won both ends of a pivotal PSUAC baseball doubleheader against PSU Beaver on Tuesday afternoon. PSUMA claimed the opener on a Joseph Wunsch (Dover, Del. / Dover Area) walk-off RBI single off the outfield fence in the eight inning for a 5-4 win. In the nightcap, Spencer Meyers (Greencastle, Pa. / Greencastle Antrim) was a steady presence on the mound leading the way for the 12-3 win.

Penn State Beaver opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning. The Mont Alto bats initially came alive in the bottom of the fourth as Jeremiah Younker (Hagerstown, Md. / Williamsport) doubled to open the frame and scored when center fielder Hunter Martin (Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) doubled as well to cut the deficit to 3-1. Brady Topper (Littlestown, Pa. / Littlestown) joined the hit parade with a single, which scored Younker. 

The visitors added to their lead in the fifth inning when Justyn Francona stung an RBI single off of Lowell Singer (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring). However, PSUMA would tie it up in the bottom half of the frame when Nick Jacoby (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) singled home Colby Black (Shippensburg, Pa. / Big Spring) and Topper collected his second hit of the day on an RBI single, which scored Jacoby.

Wunsch's RBI walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth broke the tie and was his sixth RBI of the season. Singer earned the win on the bump pitching all eight innings for Mont Alto. 

In game two, Spencer Meyers (Greencastle, Pa. / Greencastle Antrim) tossed 5.1 innings and struck out seven for his third win of the season. Joe Morrett (Dover, Pa. / Dover Area) made his sixth appearance of the season out of the bullpen and lowered his season ERA to 3.86 in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The top half of the PSUMA lineup especially produced with Jeremiah Younker (Hagerstown, Md. / Williamsport) leading the way with five RBIs. Younker went 3-for-5 as Joel Clabaugh (Landisburg, Pa. / West Perry) and Colby Black (Shippensburg, Pa. / Big Spring) also produced multi-hit efforts.

Mont Alto held an early 3-1 lead and really broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring six runs on four hits within the frame. The PSUMA lineup chased the visiting relief pitcher Matt Capo from the game within the inning.

Mont Alto (8-10, 4-1 PSUAC) closes its three-game series with PSU Beaver with a road contest on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
