Baseball loses ranked battle

Game 1: Penn State DuBois 6, Penn State Mont Alto 2

Game Story

Penn State Mont Alto dropped the first game of the doubleheader amongst two of the top three teams in the latest USCAA poll as Penn State DuBois defeated Penn State Mont Alto 6-2. Penn State Mont Alto struck first in the second inning, scoring two runs. Jared Pine plated Jarrett Goodyear on a RBI single and Chance McClure followed that up scoring Caiden Smith on his own RBI single. Penn State Mont Alto starter Logan Layton found trouble the following inning. Colby Bodtorf was hit by a pitch, then stole second base. Layton walked the next hitter to bring up Daniel Stauffer. Stauffer took a Layton offering over the left field fence to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. Trevor Hanna continued the third inning rally with a RBI double to left field. Hanna came around to score on a Brett Beith single to center field. Penn State DuBois was able to score five runs in the third inning on three hits. Logan Wagner recorded a RBI double in the top of the sixth to give Penn State DuBois a four run cushion late. Trevor Hanna picked up his second win of the season for Penn State DuBois, throwing seven innings and striking out five. Logan Layton went five innings, faning five batters. Jared Pine recorded a 4 for 4 game, pacing the Penn State Mont Alto offense. Tyler Moreland went 3 for 3 in game one.

Game 2: Penn State DuBois 1, Penn State Mont Alto 0

Game Story

Penn State DuBois earned a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon by winning a pitchers duel in game two. Penn State DuBois starter Taylor Boland struck out 11 and Penn State Mont Alto starter Zach Garlin struck out eight. The two teams combined for four total hits in the second game. Tyler Yough provided the only offense of the second game when he plated Daniel Stauffer on a RBI single in the top of the fourth inning. Stauffer went 1-2 for Penn State DuBois. Brett Beith recorded the other hit for Penn State DuBois in the game. Brady Bigler broke up Boland's no-hit bid in the bottom of the sixth inning when he kept a Penn State Mont Alto rally going. Penn State Mont Alto had runners on first and second for Chance McClure with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. McClure grounded into a fielder's choice, ending the sixth inning threat for the home team.
