Mont Alto opens season with split against Apprentice

Game 1: Apprentice 3, Penn State Mont Alto 1

 

The defending PSUAC champions Penn State Mont Alto got their 2023 campaign kicked off on Saturday afternoon as they traveled to Apprentice to take on the defending Small College National Champions.

 

Zach Garlin went 5.1 innings for Mont Alto, striking out 6 batters as he was the losing pitcher of record.

 

Nick Redman earned his second win of the young season for the Builders, striking out 11 batters in his five innings of work.

 

Apprentice built a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Jeremy Harmon scored Nolan Edwards on an RBI ground out to break the scoreless tie. Matt Phoebus later doubled to score Hunter Johnson.

 

Blake Orndorff got Mont Alto on the board in the top of the sixth inning as he plated Kyle Nolan with his RBI single. Mont Alto trailed 2-1 after six. 

 

Riggs Ellis would tack on an insurance run in the bottom half of the sixth inning with his sacrifice fly.

 

Game 2: Penn State Mont Alto 10, Apprentice 4

Penn State Mont Alto quickly rebounded in game two with a six run outburst in the top of the fourth inning to earn a split of the two game series with Apprentice.

 

Connor Orner struck early, recording his first collegiate home run in the top of the first as Mont Alto led 2-0.

 

Apprentice retook the lead in the bottom of the third inning with RBI hits from Camden Weston, Caleb Russell and Riggs Ellis. Apprentice led 4-2 after three innings of play.

 

Mont Alto scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning behind RBI hits from Braden Zeger and Tyler Moreland. Jared Pine and Matthew Boyer each recorded RBI walks and Brady Bigler plated Boyer on a RBI groundout.

 

Tyler Moreland helped Mont Alto add to their big lead with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning. Jarrett Goodyear plated Bigler with a RBI hit through the right side as Mont Alto led 10-4 after the sixth inning.

 

Trystan Housman got the start on the mound in game two, going three innings while striking out two. Tyler Koser earned the win in relief of Housman, pitching three strong innings allowing just one hit.
