Baseball clinches top spot in PSUAC west

Game One: Penn State Mont Alto 12, Penn State Fayette 0 (F/5 innings)

 

Penn State Mont Alto combined for 11 runs in the second and third innings of the game one defeat of Penn State Fayette on Sunday afternoon. Zach Garlin picked up his fourth win of the season, striking out seven batters and allowing three hits. With his first inning strikeout of Cade Warrick, Garlin struck out the 200th batter of his career.

 

Jared Pine plated three runs with his RBI double to right center field. Blake Orndorff later singled up the middle to score Pine. Jarrett Goodyear singled to center field to score Brady Bigler for the fourth run of the inning. Orndorff would score on the next at-bat following the result of a double play. 

 

In the home half of the third inning, Kyle McKeon, Jared Pine and Blake Orndorff each recorded RBI base hits as Mont Alto scored five runs on four hits.

 

Following a scoreless fourth inning, Garlin retired the Fayette batters in order in the top of the fifth inning to clinch the game one victory.

Game Two: Penn State Mont Alto 8, Penn State Fayette 7 (F/8 innings)

 

Penn State Mont Alto won a see-saw affair in game two of the doubleheader which saw two lead changes before Mont Alto came up on top with a 8-7 win in eight innings. 

 

Caiden Smith singled down the right field line in the bottom of the first inning as Mont Alto led 1-0 after one inning. Josh Burns tied the game in the fourth inning as he plated Sawyer D'Andrea with his RBI base hit to left field. Blake Orndorff quickly gave Mont Alto back the lead with a RBI single to second base.

 

Smith would come up big for Mont Alto again in the home half of the fifth inning as he homered to right center, a two run shot which scored Jarrett Goodyear. Mont Alto led 4-1 following five innings of play. Fayette was able to get to Mont Alto reliever Luke Davis as they tied the game with a total of three runs and five hits in the inning.

 

Mont Alto would retake the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as both Brady Bigler and Kyle Neuendorf recorded RBI hits, Mont Alto led 6-4 after six innings. In the top of the seventh, Cade Warrick and Ethan Rendulic recorded back-to-back RBI hits to push the Fayette lead to one run entering the home half of the seventh inning. A couple of Mont Alto base runners reached for Blake Orndorff, who singled up the middle to score the tying run. 

 

Mont Alto pinch hitter Jonathan Lentvorsky led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a walk and later stole second base to get into scoring position. Kyle McKeon provided the walk off when he single to left field, scoring Lentvorsky and giving Mont Alto the 8-7 win in eight innings.
