Mont Alto advances in Small College World Series following opening win against Bryant & Stratton 7-0

USCAA Small College World Series: Penn State Mont Alto 7, Bryant & Stratton (Albany) 0

 

Penn State Mont Alto faced off against Bryant & Stratton (Albany) on Monday afternoon in DuBois, Pennsylvania for the opening game of the USCAA Small College World Series. Caiden Smith hit two home runs to power the offense and backed up a strong start from Zach Garlin to advance to Tuesday's winner's bracket semifinal contest.

 

Both teams went scoreless through the first two innings until Penn State Mont Alto busted open the score for four runs in the bottom half of the third inning. Nathanial Smith started off the inning with a single to left center. Following a sacrifice bunt, Jared Pine was intentionally walked to put two runners on with one out in the inning. Brady Bigler laid down a bunt with runners on second and third and reached base and scored the first two runs of the game on an error by the pitcher. Caiden Smith would drive in two runs with his first home run of the game on the next batter to put Mont Alto up 4-0.

 

Mont Alto would add on insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Bigler scored Pine with a single up the middle. Smith would hit his second home run of the game on a drive to center field, scoring Bigler and giving Mont Alto a 7-0 advantage heading into the sixth inning.

 

Garlin struck out eight batters in seven innings of work to pick up his fifth win of the season.
