McKeesport Pa. – A frantic comeback within the final minute of play fell just short as the Mont Alto men's basketball team dropped a 69-67 game to Penn State Greater Allegheny (13-7, 9-5 PSUAC). PSUMA erased a 10-point deficit within the final minute to bring the game to two, but Greater Allegheny did just enough to hold on.

Inside the Box Score

  • Mont Alto was the better shooting 3-point team finishing with a 28% clip, but it was the second chance points especially in the second half that helped GA.
  • The matchup featured four different lead changes on Friday with Greater Allegheny opening up a 14-point advantage within the second half.
  • Junior guard Quintyn Flemister (Harrisburg, Pa. / Harrisburg) dropped a career-high 34 points, including 5-of-10 makes from downtown. He also had four steals, including two within the final minute of action.
  • JR Powe (Frederick, Md. / Thomas Johnson) recorded 31 minutes off the bench and tallied a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
  • Makis Rivera led Greater Allegheny with 17 points and six boards to help hand PSUMA just their second conference loss of the season.

How it Happened

  • Both teams looked to push the pace early but neither was able to get a real advantage. The visitors had a 10-4 lead at the 13:06 mark of the first quarter with a Darrius Bush (Martinsburg, W.Va. / Spring Mills) 3-pointer. The teams went on to trade possession and Mont Alto lead 19-17 at the 7:06 mark after a Coach Schenzel, 30-second timeout.
  • Flemister nailed a 3-pointer and then a jumper in the paint in back-to-back possessions that put his team up 27-23.
  • Offensive rebounding by Greater Allegheny gave them life and they went on a run that saw them go up 45-39 in the second half.
  • The second chance points continued as PSUGA established a double-digit lead that wasn't challenged until the final minute or so of play when Mont Alto forced multiple turnovers. It was too little to late as a Bush heave as time expired hit the backboard.

Mont Alto has a quick turnaround remaining on the road for a PSUAC contest against PSU Fayette. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
