Huge second half lifts Mont Alto into semifinals

PSUAC Quarterfinals: Penn State Mont Alto 68, Penn State Fayette 54

 

Penn State Mont Alto overcame a rough shooting first half in which they went 6 of 31 (19%) to outburst for 48 points in the final half of a 68-54 quarterfinal win over Penn State Fayette on Sunday afternoon. Four starters for Mont Alto scored in double-digits, led by Cameron Williams (18), Anthony Davis (14), Nathan Osei (14) and Caleb Eckert (13).

 

Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net in the first ten minutes of the opening half as Mont Alto found itself in an early deficit of 16-9. Matt Forbes connected on a three pointer minutes later to extend the Fayette cushion to eleven at 21-10 with 7:45 left in the first half. Mont Alto hung around below double-digits as Cameron Williams hit a three to trim the lead to six at 21-15. Caleb Eckert hit on one of his two free throw attempts and Dorian Jenkins made a jumper with 20 seconds left to give Fayette a 28-20 halftime advantage.

 

Five minutes into the second half, Mont Alto found its first lead since the score was 3-2 in the opening minute of competition on a Cameron Williams layup. Anthony Davis made a pair of free throws to give Mont Alto a 31-28 lead with 14:37 left in the game. Mont Alto seized control the remainder of the way in the second half, outscoring Fayette 48-26. Fayette found themselves in foul trouble much of the second half, leading to many free throw attempts for the Nittany Lions. Mont Alto converted 17 of 20 free throw attempts in the second half on their way to Wednesday's semifinals against Penn State Wilkes-Barre.

 

For the game Mont Alto went 23-28 from the free throw line and shot 45% from the field in the second half compared to just 19% in the first half. Mont Alto was also able to capitalize off of 22 Fayette turnovers, scoring 22 points off turnovers. 

 

With Sunday's quarterfinal win, Penn State Mont Alto will now host Penn State Wilkes-Barre in Wednesday's semifinal matchup. Start time is TBD.
