Mont Alto, Pa. – The Penn State Mont Alto softball team dropped game one 8-3, but in the series finale Alyssa Munns came up big holding PSU Fayette to five hits in the 3-2 victory. Munns picked up her third career victory tossing all seven innings while also striking out four.

The Lions drew first blood in the top of the second inning. Outfielder Kayla Carbaugh singled to left center field and advanced to second on a passed ball. Helayna Stanko drove in Carbaugh with a RBI double to left field. Kaitlyn Whiteaker laid down a beautiful sacrifice to advance Stanko to third and Paige Repp came up with a clutch single to put Penn State Mont Alto (2-2, 2-2 PSUAC) up 2-0.

The visiting Roaring Lions struck back in the bottom half of the inning when pitcher Tiffany Markovitch helped out her own cause scoring on an error after she doubled to begin the inning. Penn State Fayette (5-9, 2-2 PSUAC) tied the game up at two runs apiece in the bottom of the fourth when Markovitch hit a sacrifice fly to left field.

Penn State Mont Alto scored the eventual winning run in the top of the sixth.  Kayla Carbaugh opened the inning with a walk and would advance to third on a Kaitlyn Whiteaker single. With runners on first and third, Geraldine Perez slashed the ball to PSU Fayette third basemen Haley Rugg who fielded the ball cleanly, but airmailed her throw to first, which allowed Carbaugh to score.  Alyssa Munns gave up a hit in both the sixth and seventh innings, but composed herself ensuring the 3-2 win for the Lions.

In game one, both teams scored a run in the opening frame before Penn State Fayette exploded for four runs in the third inning. PSU Mont Alto never recovered as it gave up another three runs in the fourth. The Lions clawed back scoring in the sixth and seventh innings, but it was too little to late as they fell by an 8-3 score.

Penn State Mont Alto returns to action on Wednesday, March 29 when it squares off with PSUAC foe Penn State DuBois for a doubleheader. Game times are slated for 2 and 4 p.m.
