Softball Comes Up Short in Doubleheader with PSU Greater Allegheny

MONT ALTO, Pa. – The Penn State Mont Alto softball team suffered its first defeat of the season on Friday afternoon dropping both ends of the doubleheader to PSU Greater Allegheny (6-3, 4-0 PSUAC). Mont Alto (4-0, 2-2 PSUAC) fell by a 3-0 score in the opener and suffered a 7-4 defeat in the nightcap.

Inside the Box Score

  • Mont Alto was shutout for the first time this season after beginning the year 4-0.
  • Lacie Lautner held PSUMA to just three hits within the pitching circle, each of which were only singles.
  • Cassidy Feaser (Shippensburg, Pa. / Faith Tabernacle) was a hard luck loser as she only allowed two earned runs on four hits while striking out seven batters.

How it Happened

  • Penn State Greater Allegheny jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with Lacie Lautner helping her own cause with an RBI single as well as scoring a run on a Hailey Snyder single.
  • PSUGA added an insurance run in the second inning when Alyssa Guzzie doubled home her teammate Ivy Mervis.
  • Mont Alto's Samantha Updegraff (Etters, Pa. / Red Land), Helayna Stanko (Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) and Mackenzie Brymesser (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) each reached base on singles with two-outs, but the offense wasn't able bring them home.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Mont Alto bats came alive as they outhit the visitors by an 8-7 margin.
  • Krista Feaser (Shippensburg, Pa. / Faith Tabernacle) went 2-for-4, stole a pair of bases and also scored two runs.
  • Sophomore Samantha Updegraff (Etters, Pa. / Red Land) also went 2-for-4, which included an RBI double in the third inning.
  • Mackenzie Brymesser (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) wasn't her best in the pitching circle, surrendering a season-high seven runs on seven hits.

How it Happened

  • The Mont Alto offense came alive right away, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Brooklyn Wagner (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) drove in a pair on a fielding error by the right fielder and Brymesser singled the freshman shortstop home one batter later.
  • Brymesser was able to elude trouble in the bottom of the second inning only getting scathed for a pair of runs, which made it 3-2.
  • Mont Alto added to its lead on the RBI double off of the bat of Updegraff, but that concluded their scoring.
  • PSUGA did most of its damage in the third and fourth innings, scoring five runs on four hits.

Mont Alto will host PSU Greater Allegheny on Sunday to complete its four-game PSUAC series. Game times are set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
