MONACA, Pa. – The Penn State Mont Alto softball team opened PSUAC play on Saturday and were unable to edge PSU Beaver in either game as the homestanding Lions won both games by 9-0 and 19-10 scores, respectively. Mont Alto falls to 1-7 overall and 0-2 within the conference.
PSUMA were unable to manage a hit in the first game as neither team scored until Beaver plated an unearned run and an earned run on a Vanessa Jackson RBI single in the third frame. Beaver added four more runs in the next inning and put the game away in the bottom of the fifth by scoring three runs. Taylor Johnson slapped a two-RBI single as her team managed 12 hits overall in the 9-0 win. Katie McCauslin (Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) was responsible for giving up seven earned runs within the circle.
The second game proved to be more competitive as Mont Alto responded and built a 3-1 lead after the first few innings. Brooklyn Wagner (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) cleared the based with a three-run homer in the top of the third, which put her team up 3-1. Beaver came back with five runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the inning to go back up 6-3.
The scoring continued as Mont Alto scored four more runs in the top of the fourth. Meagan Smith (Littlestown, Pa. / Littlestown) ran the bases well to score a run and Delaney Wagner (Lewisburg, Pa. / Lewisburg Area), Brooklyn Wagner (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring), and Shania Walker (Halifax, Pa. / Halifax Area) each recorded RBIs. Beaver plated nine runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up 15-7
Penn State Beaver were able to mercy Mont Alto in the bottom of the fifth by scoring four runs off of McCauslin for the 19-10 final. PSUMA return to action on Sunday, March 24 when they complete the season series with Beaver with a home doubleheader. Game times are slated for 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
