Mont Alto squanders late lead in PSUAC Playoffs

PSUAC Softball Semifinals: Penn State New Kensington 8, Penn State Mont Alto 7

 

Penn State New Kensington scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to advance to Monday's PSUAC championship contest by defeating Penn State Mont Alto by a final of 8-7 on Sunday afternoon at Beard Field.

 

Penn State Mont Alto's offense struck early again against New Kensington starter Addyson Gregg as they put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning. McKenna Sas recorded a RBI single, Destiny Hall scored Delaney Glazer on a RBI groundout and Rachel Alleman later sscored Sas on a sacrifice fly as Mont Alto built an early 3-0 lead.

 

Alleman scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the third inning to build a 4-0 lead. New Kensington would score two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to tie the contest at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Sierra Sims and Kirsten Dell each recorded RBI singles to build the lead back to 6-4 following five innings of play.

 

With Mont Alto leading 6-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Sas took an Addyson Gregg offering to left center field for a solo home run. Mont Alto would take the insurance run and a 7-5 advantage into the final frame.

 

New Kensington wouldn't go down without a fight however, as they would receive a leadoff walk from Gregg and two triples in the inning later tied the game at 7-7. Molly Collins would score Kiera Mack after her RBI triple to put New Kensington up late 8-7.

 

The Mont Alto comeback effort fell short as New Kensington fielded all three infield groundouts in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 8-7.
