Alexis Shaffer Goes For Double-Double In Loss to Wilson College

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Mont Alto women's basketball team went head-to-head with crosstown rivals Wilson College on Wednesday evening. The Phoenix came out on top 83-79 as the Nittany Lions fell to 1-2 on the 2017-18 season with Alexis Shaffer (Hagerstown, Md. / South Hagerstown) going for her second straight double-double with 22 points and 17 rebounds off the bench.

Inside the Box Score

  • Shaffer came off the Mont Alto bench and scored a team-high 22 points. The redshirt senior added 17 boards with seven of them coming on the offensive side of the court.
  • Karley Coleman (Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic) was active chipping in eight points with eight assists, nine rebounds, and five steals. Julianne Noveras (Gaithersburg, Md. / Gaithersburg) poured in a career-high 19 points.
  • Charity Miller (Greencastle, Pa. / James Buchanan) played 35 minutes and had 16 points with seven assists, five boards and a steal. Miller went 2-of-5 from 3-point range.

How It Happened:

  • The Phoenix were the aggressors early within the first quarter beginning with a 10-0 run that led them to a 14 point lead. Mont Alto settled into its tempo ending the first quarter down nine points, 23-14.
  • The Nittany Lions out-scored the home team 20-11 in the second quarter, which allowed it to go into halftime tied at 34 points apiece.
  • The competition in the second half got tighter, but the Phoenix were able to pull ahead early in the half to take a 49-38 lead.  
  • The Nittany Lions didn't back down with Charity Miller (Greencastle, Pa. / James Buchanan) opening the final quarter with the first of what would be a series of three pointers that was detrimental to the Phoenix's lead. The Nittany Lions Julianne Noveras (Gaithersburg, Md. / Gaithersburg) made two three-point buckets in a row to tie the game up 66-66. 
  • The games' leading scorer Lindsey Purvis had a game-high 28 points and came up big with free throws down the stretch to lead the homestanding Phoenix to the win.

Penn State Mont Alto returns to action on Friday, November 17 in a road contest with Trinity Washington. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
