Women’s Basketball Lead from Start to Finish in Win over Schuylkill

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. – The Penn State Mont Alto women's basketball team posted a dominating win on Friday evening as they led from start to finish in a 74-41 win over PSU Schuylkill.

Inside the Box Score

  • Three of Mont Alto's starters finished in double figures with Mariah Martin (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) pacing the squad with 18 points. The freshman forward finished one rebound shy of a double-double as she corralled five offensive boards to go along with four rebounds on the defensive end of the floor.
  • Kara Newell (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) poured in 15 points and splashed the teams only 3-pointer of the game. Newell also tied a season-high with seven steals. The freshman guard has upped her scoring over the last month and is now averaging 8.3 points per game.
  • Senior Karley Coleman (Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic) was the other PSUMA starter who finished in double figures with 10 points. Coleman shot 5-of-11 from the field and added a pair of assists as well as five rebounds.
  • Mont Alto had its best shooting night of the season, converting 34-of-69 shots (49.3%).
  • It was a one-man show for Schuylkill with Morgan Edge scoring a game-high 23 points. Edge was the only student-athlete to score 10 or more points for her team.

How it Happened

  • Mont Alto playing in its second-straight road game, came out firing on all cylinders with an outstanding first quarter that saw them end the period with a 21-9 lead.
  • The Lions built on that advantage throughout the second quarter holding Schuylkill to only three made shots within the entire period. Mont Alto held a 36-15 lead going into halftime.
  • Mont Alto capitalized on Schuylkill's turnovers especially in the second half. The team scored 28 points overall off of the homestanding Lions miscues.
  • PSUMA raced out to its largest lead of the game within the fourth quarter building a 35-point lead after a Meagan Smith (Littlestown, Pa. / Littlestown) jumper in the paint with 7:17 remaining.
  • Mont Alto would march on to victory over the closing minutes by the final score of 74-41.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow, January 26, where they will travel to take on Penn State Hazleton at 1 p.m. in another PSUAC matchup.
