Women's Basketball Secures Non-Conference Victory over Trinity Washington

MONT ALTO, Pa. -The Penn State Mont Alto women's basketball team recorded their ninth win of the season by easily defeating Trinity Washington 80-30 Wednesday night in a non-conference matchup.

Freshman guard Meagan Smith (Littlestown, Pa. / Littlestown) led all scorers with 20 points and added 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Another freshman, Mariah Martin (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg), contributed 15 points, and 8 rebounds.

Trinity Washington was led by senior Alyssa King, who accounted for 19 of the team's 30 points.

Brianna Roache scored the first basket to give Trinity Washington their only lead of the game. Two baskets by Penn State's Martin helped tie the score at 4-4. Then Mont Alto closed out the first quarter on a 20-3 run, aided by three Kara Newell (Shippensburg, Pa./ Shippensburg) baskets.

Mont Alto extended the lead throughout the second quarter to hold a 40-11 advantage at halftime.

Smith scored 12 of her 20 points in the second half as Mont Alto continued to pull away from Trinity Washington, which shot just 18.8% from the floor. Mont Alto enjoyed a massive 70-35 rebounding advantage to help account for the large margin of victory.

After the game, Penn State Mont Alto coach Mary Miller reflected on the game by stating that they knew the opponent and wanted to play with respect. It allowed the opportunity to try new player combinations and new plays while trying to execute well.

Penn State Mont Alto is on the road Tuesday, February 12 at Penn State New Kensington and will play the final regular season game at home Feb. 15 against Penn State Dubois on Senior Night.
