Women’s Basketball Picks Up Second Straight Win

DuBois, Pa. – The Penn State Mont Alto women's basketball team picked up a hard fought road victory Friday night against PSU DuBois. PSUMA produced a strong third quarter as they won by a 58-49 final.

Inside the Box Score

  • Mont Alto improves to 3-9 overall and 1-7 within the PSUAC, while DuBois fell to 10-4 and 5-3 within the conference.
  • PSUMA shot 33.9% from the field and knocked down 3-of-18 shots from downtown. They played stingy defense holding the home team to 30.2% from the field and 1-of-17 from 3-point range.
  • The Nittany Lions were led by a trio of double digit scorers with Madison Bishop (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) leading the pack with 15 points. Fellow sophomore Mariah Martin (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) tallied another double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Kara Newell (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, four boards and three assists.
  • Malliah Schreck led Penn State DuBois with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

How it Happened

  • Mont Alto got off to a 5-2 lead after Kara Newell (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) drained a trey. Neither team shot particularly well within the first quarter as they essentially traded buckets. Grace Banfe (Greencastle, Pa. / Shalom Christian Academy) knocked down a jumper to give them the 11-10 lead with 1:12 left in the period.  Maggie Schmader hit the last shot of the period to give DuBois the 14-13 lead.
  • It was a close scoring second period with Mont Alto leading for spurts of it before the score was tied up at 21 points apiece with 2:53 left with Cierra O'Shell hitting the frontend of her free throws. She hit the backend to give DuBois the 25-24 lead going into the halftime break.
  • Mont Alto outscored the home team by 12 points within the third quarter. Madison Bishop (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) scored seven points within the period to lead the way as her team combined to hit 8-of-15 attempts from the field.
  • PSUMA carried all the momentum into the fourth quarter as a Meagan Smith (Littlestown, Pa. / Littlestown) jumper made it 51-36. The Nittany Lions ran out a 16-point lead the largest of the game with a Martin free throw with 7:58 remaining. Mont Alto played stingy defense in the final quarter and held on for the 58-49 win.

Due to the impending winter storm in the Mid-Atlantic region, the basketball doubleheader at Penn State Greater Allegheny has been rescheduled for February 7. Mont Alto will now return to action on Wednesday, January 22 against Christendom College.
