MONT ALTO, Pa. – The Penn State Mont Alto women's basketball team won its fourth-straight home game to keep its playoff hopes alive on Tuesday with a 62-43 win over PSU New Kensington on Tuesday evening. Mont Alto hosted a Stand for State Awareness event as they also successfully avenged an earlier season loss to PSUNK.

Inside the Box Score

  • Madison Bishop (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) scored a season-high 25 points as she was lights out from downtown connecting on 5-of-8 3-pointers. She also grabbed 10 rebounds for the double-double as the sophomore guard also dished out a pair of assists.
  • Mont Alto led from start to finish to avenge an earlier 52-40 loss within the month of November.
  • New Kensington really couldn't get much going especially after a cold first quarter as the team finished shooting a 32.7% clip from the field. The Mont Alto pressure defense also forced 26 turnovers.
  • Deshaya Chavis scored 14 points for the visitors who dropped to 2-20 overall and 1-14 within the PSUAC.

How it Happened

  • PSUMA had another quick start at home as they scored the first eight points of the game and held a 10-point lead at 14-4 after a Kara Newell (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) layup. New Kensington knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 14-7 after one quarter of play. Mont Alto's press caused multiple New Kensington mistakes.
  • Bishop really turned up her scoring remaining hot in the second quarter and put her team up 22-7 with a trey. New Kensington scored the next five points to get back to within striking distance (22-12). Mont Alto closed the period on a 5-2 run to take a 27-14 lead into the half. Mont Alto forced 15 turnovers compared to only five mishaps.
  • Bishop opened the third quarter with another trey before connecting on a jumper in the paint to give Mont Alto an 18-point advantage at 32-14. Scoring became more balanced for Mont Alto after they built the 18-point margin. The lead stayed right around 20 as the teams traded play for the remainder of the third quarter.
  • Mont Alto went largely untested through the final quarter, as they were able to constantly break the PSUNK press defense. Madison Bishop (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) was a perfect 2-of-2 from downtown in the decisive period.

Mont Alto returns to action in a road contest on Saturday, February 15 against Penn State Wilkes-Barre. Tip-off for this PSUAC conference game is slated for 1 p.m.
