Buckley's late first half goal pushes Mont Alto past Schuylkill 2-1

Penn State Mont Alto 2, Penn State Schuylkill 1

Penn State Mont Alto scored a pair of first half goals, which proved to be the difference in a tough PSUAC matchup on Thursday afternoon against Penn State Schuylkill. The Nittany Lions used goals from Alexis Mariano (37') and Courtney Buckley (40') to defeat Penn State Schuylkill 2-1. With the win, Mont Alto improved to 11-3-1 overall and 9-0-0 in the PSUAC. Mont Alto currently sits atop the PSUAC with their 9-0 mark and will take on second place Brandywine on Saturday at 1pm for the regular season soccer title. The game also marks senior day for four Mont Alto student-athletes and is the annual Pink Out game.

The early portion of the first half featured plenty of back and forth action and plenty of pressure from Schuylkill as Kiaya Mouer made three saves in a seven minute span to keep the game scoreless. Mont Alto would strike first when Alexis Mariano took a feed from Nicole Jones and beat the keeper to the far side. The Mont Alto lead would be short lived as Schuylkill took a Mont Alto lost ball and Grace Fenstermacher squeaked a ball past Kiaya Mouer to tie the score at 1-1.

The scoring burst continued a few minutes later when Madison Eberly sent a cross to the left side where Courtney Buckley was all alone. Buckley took one dribble and found the back of the net to the right side. Mont Alto took a 2-1 advantage into the break.

Mont Alto dominated the second half of play in shots with a 9-4 advantage. Both teams had several scoring chances, but the second half remained scoreless and Mont Alto held on for the 2-1 win.
