Vaughn records 15 kills, Mont Alto drops home opener to Lycoming

Lycoming 3, Penn State Mont Alto 0 (12-25, 23-25, 23-25)

 

Gracie Vaughn continued her strong play in the 2023 season following up being name to the All-Tournament team at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic with a 15 kill performance on 25 attack attempts in the Mont Alto home volleyball opener on Wednesday evening. Mont Alto got out to a 3-1 advantage in the opening set before Ali Koval led Lycoming on a 7-1 spurt to go ahead 10-5 early. With the score 17-7, Lycoming took eight of the next 13 points to take control of the first set 25-12.

 

Mont Alto would battle back in the second set, keeping the set tight throughout with a 15-14 advantage near the midway mark. A kill by Brynne Bisel tied the set at 15-15 before a 5-0 commenced allowing Lycoming to take a 19-15 lead. Caroline Blickley and Gracie Vaughn each recorded two kills and Gabby Baughman tallied a service ace to retake the lead 22-19. Lycoming rallied late in the set to win set two 25-23.

 

The two non-conference foes battled throughout the third set before Lycoming eventually squeaked out a narrow 25-23 set win. For Penn State Mont Alto, they move to 0-5 overall following a tough non-conference slate. They will head to Penn State DuBois on Saturday for their first tri-match of the season.

 

Following Vaughn's 15 kills on offense were Leslie Huckle and Caroline Blickley each with six. Kylie Denlinger accounted for 29 of the team's 31 assists on the evening. Brooke Denlinger paced the defense with ten of the team's 36 digs.
