Baseball splits opening doubleheader with Apprentice

Game One: Penn State Mont Alto 7, Apprentice 3

Zach Garlin picked up his first victory of the 2024 season and James Sibert led the way with three hits as Mont Alto picked up their first win of the season with a 7-3 win over Apprentice. Garlin went six innings, striking out five batters and Sibert allowed one run in one inning to shut the door on a comeback attempt. 

 

Cameron Bailey and Blake Orndorff also paced the Mont Alto offense in game one with two hits a piece. Jarrett Goodyear got the scoring started in the top of the second inning when he plated Garrett Rosenberry on a sacrifice fly. Mont Alto would tack on another in the top of the third when Brady Bigler scored Sibert with a single to right center.

 

Mont Alto's big inning came in the top of the fourth when a two RBI double from Gavin Kissel and a two RBI triple from Sibert opened the lead even more with the visitors leading 6-0 after four innings. 

 

Apprentice responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, but Cameron Bailey helped get that run back with a RBI double down the left field line.

 

Game Two: Apprentice 10, Penn State Mont Alto 9

Mont Alto built a 9-4 lead after five and a half innings as Apprentice rallied in the late innings to take game two of the twinbill by a final of 10-9. 

 

Wyatt Kissel plated the first run of the game as he scored Sibert on a RBI hit in the top of the first. Over the next three innings, Apprentice would scratch a few runs across to take a 5-1 lead after four innings of play.

 

Caiden Smith scored one run and Wyatt Kissel plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning as Mont Alto trailed 5-4 after five innings of play. Sibert and Smith each scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning and Blake Orndorff finished the inning with a RBI single to right field. Mont Alto led 9-5 after five and a half innings of play.

 

Riggs Ellis singled through the right side, plating two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to trim the Mont Alto lead in half entering the seventh. Matt Phoebus and Camden Weston each recorded RBI hits to tie the score at 9-9. Riggs Ellis walked later in the inning, scoring the final run from third giving Apprentice the game two win 10-9.
