Mont Alto Finishes Ninth in Final Tune Up Before PSUAC/USCAA Championship

Gettysburg, Pa. – Competing against 11 NCAA Division III institutions, the Penn State Mont Alto golf team scored a ninth-place finish at the Gettysburg Fall Invitational from the Hanover Country Club. Golfers competed in beautiful conditions on the 6505-yard course on Wednesday afternoon in the final tune up before next weeks PSUAC/USCAA National Championship.

Senior Owen Groft (Hanover, Pa. / New Oxford) competing on his hometown course was the top individual finisher for Mont Alto carding a six-over round of 77. His score tied for sixth-place. Sophomore Tom Shearer (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg Area) was the next best finisher for the Lions as he tied for eighth with a seven-over round of 78. Bryce Watkins from Messiah College and McDaniel College's Christan Garruppo tied for first with a 73, but medalist honors went to Watkins who had a lower score on the back-9.

Rounding up the Lions four-man team score of 357 were Robert Sirk (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro Area) and Dayne Conner (Shippensburg, Pa. / Big Spring). Sirk shot a round of 92 and Conner tied for 56th overall with 110 strokes.

Mont Alto will compete in the PSUAC/USCAA Championships next Monday and Tuesday. The championships will be held in University Park on Penn State's Blue Course with each round beginning at 9 a.m.
