Men's soccer kicks off season with non-conference win over Patrick Henry

Penn State Mont Alto 5, Patrick Henry 0

The Penn State Mont Alto Men's Soccer team hoped to carry its momentum from the end of last season into the 2023 campaign. They did just that, tallying a goal in the games first few minutes and cruising to a 5-0 shutout victory over Patrick Henry in non-conference action to move to 1-0 on the season.

Five different Mont Alto players found the back of the net in the winning effort. Thomas Oberholzer took a misplayed cross by the Patrick Henry defense from River Terry in the second minute of action for a 1-0 Mont Alto lead. Mont Alto kept the offensive pressure on for much of the first half and it paid off in the 32nd minute as Devin Wynkoop scored his first collegiate goal. River Terry scored on a pass upfield from Thomas Lane a minute later as Mont Alto led 3-0 after 45 minutes of action.

Garrett Haskell was able to find the back of the net for his first collegiate goal as well in the games 48th minute to push the lead to four goals. The second half would go without a goal for the next thirty minutes until Devonte Henry added an insurance goal in the 76th minute.

The constant offensive pressure paid off for Mont Alto as they led the game in shots 26-12 with 11 in the first half and 15 in the second. Oberholzer (4) and Terry (3) paced the team in shots on goal. Owen Henry led Patrick Henry with a team-leading two shots on goal.

Zach Stum stopped all four shots on goal in the first half to pick up his first collegiate win in goal. Jawad Malik stopped both of his shots on goal during his second half of action.
